'Zomp' Boat-Building Minigames
We have developed a series of minigames centered around the construction of a 'zomp'—a traditional flat-bottomed boat. A unique feature of these games is the crossover between physical and virtual elements.
1. Interactive Planing Game
Building a 'zomp' requires planing wood. In the museum, visitors can take part in a 'planing contest' using two traditional, physical hand planes; a screen displays which participant is planing the fastest.
2. Pegging (Dowel-Driving) Game
This interactive game focuses on mortise-and-tenon joinery. Players use a real hammer to strike a steel peg. Sensors detect the strikes and any rotation, feeding this data into our software. This allows visitors to play a game where the goal is to drive as many virtual pegs as possible into the hull of the boat—ensuring each one is oriented in the correct direction.
3. Interactive Puzzle
On a large touchscreen, visitors can assemble a virtual 'zomp'. It turns out to be quite a challenge—with a fun twist: if you make a mistake, the boat sinks!
